KATflow 200 offers a ‘smooth’ solution for ‘tough’ applications
Katronic engineers recently tested a portable ultrasonic flow meter to assess its performance in an industrial wastewater application.
Clamp-on flow measurement successfully implemented despite high solids content
The challenge was to measure the flow rate from a tanker containing an unknown quantity of gravel and crushed stone. The customer had already attempted to measure the flow using in-line flowmeters, but the solid content and high flow velocity had caused the instruments to fail within a few weeks.
The customer now intends to install clamp-on flowmeters in order to obtain reliable flow data and to prevent damage to flowmeters in operation. Katronic offered a free demonstration of its versatile portable flow meter, the KATflow 200, to illustrate the suitability of the device for this application. The results were very positive, as the measurement data matched the values from the weighbridge.
Whilst the tanker was being unloaded, the ‘rattling’ of the solid particles through the 100 mm pipe was clearly audible; however, this did not in any way affect the quality of the measurements taken. During the two runs, the Katronic flow meter recorded 25,500 litres at a flow velocity of 3.8 m/s, which explains why the in-line flow meters used previously had performance issues. The next step will be to install two KATflow 100 measuring devices so that continuous on-site flow measurements can be carried out in future.
