Egyptian metering district uses Katronic flow meters for leakage management in the network

Flow meters integrated into the telemetry system enable remote inspection, predictive maintenance and the detection of water losses.

Katronic flow measurement aids leak detection in Egypt’s water network

Katronic’s non-invasive ultrasonic flowmeters, which are supplied alongside a range of other measuring instruments by its Egyptian partner Astronic, provide vital flow data for the Cairo Water District Metered Area (DMA) projects. Astronic is integrating the Katronic KATflow 100 and KATflow 150 flow meters into a telemetry control panel developed in-house, which provides key data for monitoring and controlling the local water networks. This improves the water supply and reduces leaks.

Investment in the Egyptian water system is helping to resolve some of the supply problems in the country. According to many estimates, a combination of outdated infrastructure, agricultural demands and uncontrolled development in some areas has led to leaks and a wastage of over 30 per cent of drinking water. Astronic has established itself as a leading supplier to the Egyptian water and wastewater industry and has developed a product portfolio tailored to the sector’s diverse requirements, including telemetry and data visualisation systems for DMA applications, where pressure and flow measurement and control are crucial for leak detection.
Katronic flow meters feature compact transducers that are simply clamped to the outside of a filled water pipe and measure flow using the transit time method. Katronic’s modular device design makes it possible to specify the flow meter with only the outputs required for telemetry, thereby saving costs. In this case, the requirement was for a simple active 4 to 20 mA output. A DC-powered meter, operated by solar power, was selected. The benefits for the user of integrating a flow meter into a telemetry system include data visualisation across the entire network, remote inspection, predictive maintenance and the minimisation of on-site visits.

Astronic demonstrated the Katronic flow meter in its custom-designed telemetry control panel at the Marsa Matrouh Water and Wastewater Company. The success of this application led to the implementation of Astronic panels with Katronic flow meters in other facilities within the Cairo water network, particularly in the suburbs of Mokattam and Zamalek, as well as for other Egyptian applications in the Sinai, Qalyubia and Marsa Matrouh.
