A clamp-on for cleaning?

The British company Stainless Restoration Ltd. used a Katronic flow meter to remove dirt particles from pipework.

Non-invasive flow measurement for stainless steel pipes

Stainless Restoration Ltd, a metalworking company based in Stockport, has acquired a portable KATflow 200 as part of a project to clean and maintain the pipework system of heat exchangers for one of the UK’s largest and most prominent engineering groups.

The project, carried out for Rolls-Royce, involves dismantling pipework from large heat exchangers to remove particulate deposits that have accumulated on the inner surface. Iron oxide, dust, atmospheric contaminants and loose fibres are removed from the inner pipe wall using fine filters with a pore size of up to 3 micrometres, by circulating clean, demineralised water at a high flow rate through the pipework, creating sufficient turbulence within the pipe to scrub the inner wall.
A KATflow 200 ultrasonic flow meter from Katronic, fitted with K4N sensors, confirmed that the flow rate is maintained at more than 3.5 kg per second – the rate required to generate sufficiently turbulent flow to achieve the cleaning effect.

Stainless Restoration purchased the KATflow 200 after having previously hired measuring instruments from Katronic and having had a very positive experience with them. Frank Morris, the company’s managing director, commented as follows: “For us, the K200 was perfectly suited to various projects involving chemical circuits. We appreciate the flow meter’s ease of set-up and reliability; we also received excellent telephone support from the team in Coventry.”
