Noninvasive Flow Measurement in a Fish Farming Facility
Ocean Matters uses the KATflow 200 to monitor water flow in the aquaculture facility.
Leading Fish Farming Company Successfully Implements Portable Ultrasonic Flow Meter
The KATflow 200 from Katronic—a battery-powered ultrasonic flow meter—was used to monitor water flow rates at the fish farm operated by the British company Ocean Matters. The company offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to minimizing the use of medical chemicals in salmon farming. They raise sea hares, a “cleaner” species that prefers to “pick” sea lice off farmed salmon and eats up to a hundred of them in a single meal. The sea hares live in harmony with the farmed salmon and significantly reduce the amount of chemicals needed for their successful rearing.
At Ocean Matters’ biosecure facility in North Wales, nothing is left to chance. The flow of water between the fish tanks and the filtration systems is monitored using Katronics’ portable KATflow 200 flow meter. Simply clamped onto the PVC pipes, the measuring system can collect data at various measurement points to monitor and log water flow rates throughout the entire process.
Dave Jones, manager of the Ocean Matters fish farm, commented approvingly: “We were very satisfied with the ease of use of the Katronic meter and the support provided by the Katronic staff in Coventry. The key factor for us was that the device works well with our PVC pipes, and it has performed excellently.”
